Most pet owners are awakening to the reality that MOST commercial pet food companies are more concerned with lining their pockets than providing your beloved pets nutrionally balanced food. Dogs and cats are carnivores, and most commercial pet foods are full of cheap grain by-products and contain little to no fresh meat. In fact, most commercial pet foods are full of ingredients passed over for human consumption. Plump whole chickens, choice cuts of beef, and fresh grains are the ingredients pet food companies FALSLEY ADVERTISE through brilliant marketing.

The $15 billion per year U.S. pet food industry wants consumers to believe they are buying quality pet food when they are actually purchasing artful bags or cans chock full of slaughterhouse offal, grains considered “unfit for human consumption,” and similar waste products. This waste includes intestines, udders, heads, hooves, and diseased and cancerous animal parts. And if you find that hard to believe, let me assure you by saying that a local grocery store's employee told me they sell all their rotten leftovers from the butchers area to a pet food company.

Meat meals, poultry meals, by-product meals, and meat-and-bone meal are ingredients you will read on nearly every bag or can of commercial pet food. The term “meal” means that they are not fresh and have been rendered.

Because of persistent rumors that rendered by-products contain euthanized pets, the FDA conducted a study looking for pentobarbital, the most common euthanasia drug, in pet foods. They found it. Ingredients that were most commonly associated with the presence of pentobarbital were meat-and-bone-meal and animal fat. Supposedly this practice is no longer as common today, however, I don't trust the words from an industry that did that in the first place. And maybe today the pet food isn't as full of euthanized pets, but it's still full of everything it shouldn't be.
